Deborah L. Brooks has been taking photographs for over 30 years. Largely self-taught, she brings an artist's eye to her photographs. A native of Connecticut, Deborah has lived in New York City and Melbourne, Australia and now resides in Washington, DC. She has traveled extensively and draws inspiration from objects that she encounters in the course of daily life, both at home and abroad.
She has exhibited works in Milan, New York, New Orleans, Fort Collins, and numerous locations throughout the Washington, DC and Richmond areas.

I am drawn to subjects in the real world, but ones in which their reality
appears distorted or subverted to the degree that they seem to be manifestations
of the unconscious mind. My work seeks to illustrate the fine line between the
conscious and unconscious worlds and explores themes of loss and memory,
nightmares and dreams. While the subjects I photograph tend towards the surreal,
I employ modernist compositional techniques in capturing them. I work exclusively
with natural light and without a tripod to facilitate the capture of my immediate
visual and emotional response to a subject. |
